National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Nagaland regional office launched seven farmers' clubs on December 2. The clubs, promoted by Better Life Foundation (NGO), was introduced in a cluster of seven villages in Longkhim sub-division of Tuensang district through SBI Longkhim branch. The launching programme was attended by M.K Mandal DGM, NABARD, RO Dimapur; Dr. A. Saleque principal scientist, Goat Research Station, Assam Agriculture University, Burnihat; Dr. N. Nahardeka principal scientist, Goat Disease Investigation, All India Coordinated Research Project on Goat Improvement - AICRP; Dr. K. Sharma professor and Officer In-charge on FMD, AICRP and L.P. Bezbora administrative cum Estate Officer, C.V. Science Institute, Khanapara, Rev. Dr. Chingmak Kejong, secretary ECS, Tuensang; Sethrichem Sangtam, Better Life Foundation and farmers from seven villages including Sangsomong, Chungtor, Lirise, Angangba, Holongba, Phirahi and Chimonger of Longkhim sub-division.
In his speech, Mandal elaborated on functions of farmers club and its role in development of farmers in collaboration with all government department state as well as central government, agri institutes/ research centres. He also stressed on strengthening bankers and farmers' relationship and focused on productive and sustainable approach.
Better Life Foundation is working in these villages with a vision to promote comprehensive development activity as "Compact Area Development Strategy" and plan to convert this cluster of villages into a model for replication through various sustainable income generating activities.
It has set up an innovative Goat farm, a pilot project, which is now converted into community farm.
The team of senior scientists of Assam Agriculture University and AICRP visited the goat farm and conducted Participatory Learning Appraisal (PLA) exercise involving farmers from the seven villages. Base level orientation training programme (BLOTP) was also conducted for the members of seven farmers' clubs.

Pilot Project established:
The pilot
project has been set up at Chungtor village, which is a strategic village among
the Sangtam community having an area of about 40 thousand hectares of fern
wood, meadows & green pasture land. The village is inhabited by the Sangtam
tribe. This village is one the largest in terms of population and holds
important place in culture and traditions of the tribe. Chungtor village has
308 registered household with about 2200 population.
Innovative Goat farm is now Community Goat farm.
